The European Green Deal states that "energy storage and carbon capture, storage and utilization” is one of the priority areas to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of 55 % by 2030 and to become carbon neutral by 2050.

The project has received funding from the European Partnership on Metrology, co-financed by European Union Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme and from the Participating States.

Workshop on ‘Metrology for enabling CCUS at scale – Challenges and Opportunities’

Date: 23 September 2025
Location: National Physical Laboratory (NPL), Teddington, UK

The workshop opened with a keynote from Emma Haynes, Partnerships Director at NPL, who shared a glimpse into 125 years of scientific impact, with NPL being the home to a stream of exceptional scientists, such as Alan Turing. Fittingly, the venue was located right next to a clone of Isaac Newton’s apple tree.

The event continued with insightful presentations from industry, academia, metrology and standardisation (CEN/TC 474).

Before closing, participants had the opportunity to go on a lab tour where some of the measurements of CCUS took place.

We thank all stakeholders who remained engaged throughout this journey, actively sharing feedback in the regular stakeholder advisory board meetings of MetCCUS, and facilitating access to facilities, instruments, and expertise.

Morning session:

  • CEN/TC 474 Standards for carbon capture, utilization and storage. Emma Baan (CEN/TC 474)
  • FutureGrid: Carbon dioxide. Katie Jones (Innovation Analyst at National Gas)

  • Panel Discussion: CCUS measurement challenges and opportunities (Katie  Jones-National Gas, Thomas de Cazenove-Shell, Stefan Belfroid-TNO, Emma Bann-CEN TC/474)

Afternoon session:

  • Traceable and accurate gas metrology infrastructure to support CO2 gas quality and performance evaluation of materials (Dr. Manohara Gudiyor, NPL)
