In offline and online analytical methods, the CO2 sample taken must be representative of the fluid and the operating conditions (e.g. pipeline transport, post-combustion capture, etc).
This good practice guide aims to help industry and laboratories to effectively sample carbon dioxide for various conditions and applications. First, it studies the expected specifications at industrial sites, for example by identifying major CCS projects in order to understand typical industrial processes. Additionally, the authors highlight the importance of sampling lines, which are often analysed to monitor efficiency, composition and integrity of the system.
Key considerations are provided when selecting sampling vessels: conditions at sampling point, conditions of analytical instruments and the materials in contact with gases. Regarding the requirements for different vessels and the material compatibility, scientists assessed sorbent tubes, gas cylinders and sampling bags.
At the end of this good practice guide, step-by-step procedures are provided for a good sampling plan (offline and online).
Some challenges still remain and more testing is needed (e.g. stability tests); nevertheless, this guideline greatly synthesizes some critical considerations to guarantee the integrity of the CO2 sample.
