The European Green Deal states that "energy storage and carbon capture, storage and utilization” is one of the priority areas to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of 55 % by 2030 and to become carbon neutral by 2050.

The project has received funding from the European Partnership on Metrology, co-financed by European Union Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme and from the Participating States.

Watch webinar: Metrology Supporting Safe and Efficient CCUS Infrastructure – Lessons from MetCCUS and path ahead with COREu

The two projects, COREu and MetCCUS, joined forces the 30th of July 2025, to exchange insights and interim findings of the research conducted by the dozens of European companies involved in these 2 remarkable projects. With over 80 participants, the event was a real success as it demonstrated the interest of the stakeholder community in the development of CCUS to contribute to the decarbonisation objectives in Europe.

Further information on COREu:

COREu is one of the largest research and innovation projects in the field of carbon capture and storage (CCS) funded by a European programme. Its goal is to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future, targeting a reduction of 6.8 Mt/year of CO2 by 2035 and 36 Mt/year by 2050. This will be achieved by demonstrating key technologies across the entire CCS value chain in Europe. The project aims to develop new demonstration projects that connect CO2 sources with potential storage sites. Please be aware that COREu only started last year and much is still in development. For example, the COREu Metaverse has yet to be launched. If you follow our activities on social media, you will be informed about the launch date.

Further information on MetCCUS:

While the European Commission has acknowledged the role that CCUS plays in achieving climate goals, they have also stated that ‘the environmental integrity of CCUS is their overriding concern’. For this reason, MetCCUS is the first metrology project for CCUS solving the key metrology challenges identified by industry. It provides the primary standards, methods, good practice guides, and literature reviews required to successfully develop a CCUS industry in Europe.  Coordinated by VSL, the project involves 21 partners from across Europe, from October 2022 to September 2025. The project has received funding from the European Partnership on Metrology, which is co-financed by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme, as well as from the participating states.
